About NHK Japan Broadcasting Corporation

NHK - The Leader in Broadcasting Technology

NHK (Japan Broadcasting Corporation), Japan's sole public broadcaster, introduced a radio service in 1925 and a television service in 1953. NHK is financed by the receiving fee paid by each household that owns a television set. This system enables the Corporation to maintain independence from any governmental and private organization, and ensures that the opinions of viewers and listeners are assigned top priority.

Following the launch of digital satellite broadcasting in December 2000, NHK commenced digital terrestrial TV broadcasting in December 2003 in central areas of Japan's three largest cities: Tokyo, Osaka, and Nagoya. The core technology of digital broadcasting is Hi-Vision, NHK's HDTV system, which delivers clear, vivid pictures and CD-quality sound. NHK has been conducting research and development on Hi-Vision since 1964, and now almost 80% of General TV is broadcast in HD. NHK's major HDTV projects in 2003 included spectacular HD images of a total solar eclipse transmitted live from Antarctica for the first time.

NHK currently serves domestic audiences via five television and three radio services. The core channels are General TV and Educational TV, broadcast terrestrially, and three radio channels. These services provide a diverse range of programs, including news, education, and family entertainment. The three satellite channels also offer a varied and versatile range of programs. Internationally, NHK offers three TV and radio services under the NHK WORLD umbrella.

NHK has 54 stations across Japan and correspondents in 35 locations around the world. Making full use of this network, NHK will continue to offer fast, accurate and detailed reports and programs, covering a broad spectrum extending from international news to local information.

NHK has been conducting research on even more advanced technology such as "Super Hi-Vision", the Ultra High Definition system with 4,320 scanning lines (16 times better resolution than the standard HDTV system), flexible ultra-thin displays, and clear reception of TV programs on mobile terminals. NHK is also researching special-needs broadcasting services for elderly people and those with disabilities.

NHK promotes intercultural dialogue, and continually undertakes new co-production projects with broadcasting stations, production companies and distributors around the world. Between April 2003 and March 2004, NHK took part in 92 co-productions under 43 titles, of which 40 were in HD.
